Also, there is no definite cure that has been found for this disease. It can only be controlled, not cured. This is done by applying topical creams and ointments and by taking medicine. But a change of diet or looking after ones diet would also benefit the patient and could control psoriasis to a large extent.
People suffering from psoriasis need to pay close attention to what they eat. Some kinds of foods have been linked to worsening of psoriasis.
Alcohol is the first thing that should be stopped! It has been seen that the intake of alcohol severely worsens psoriasis. Symptoms can be worsened even if the patient is a light drinker. So alcohol intake by a psoriasis patient is absolutely prohibited.
Junk food should also be avoided. Psoriasis is a disease which is inflammatory. Junk foods such as burgers, pizza, chips etc tend to have a lot of saturated and trans fats and refined starches and sugars, all of which can support inflammation.
Many doctors also recommend that patients suffering from psoriasis do not have any citrus fruits. This is because at times an allergic reaction can cause psoriasis to flare up. Citrus fruits, such as grapefruit, oranges, lemons, and limes, are a common allergen. It should be noted whether or not eliminating these fruits is benefiting the patient in any way, and if the symptoms reduce.
Intake of spices should also be avoided such as pepper, cinnamon, curry, vinegar, mayo, paprika, Tabasco sauce, etc. The substances in these can flare up psoriasis.
Beverages such as decaffeinated beverages, soda, sweetened beverages, especially those with artificial flavors should be avoided.
Gluten is another thing which should not be a part of the diet of a psoriasis patient. It is a protein found in barley, rye, wheat. This can be a tough one to follow but is an important aspect of a psoriasis diet.
It should always be remembered that each psoriasis case is different and all patients should work with their doctor to come up with a diet plan that suits them the best.
